Lush and opulent, offering ripe cherry, plum and sweet spice flavors. Firm tannins, some from the oak, line the finish, so give this time to integrate. Best from 2022 through 2032.

Opening in the glass with notes of cherries, plums, spices and rose petals, the 2018 Beaune 1er Cru du Château is medium to full-bodied, rich and fleshy, with a generous core of succulent fruit, powdery tannins and a nicely defined finish. As I wrote last year, readers may wish to think of this as a rounder version of the 2005 rendition.

The 2018 Beaune du Chateau ler Cru comes from 26 hectares of vine over 27 parcels and was created in 1907. It has a straightforward blackberry and wild strawberry bouquet with just a touch of kirsch. The palate is sweet and slightly chewy on the entry. Good depth here, but not much complexity. The dense blackberry and raspberry finish reveals a touch of spice. Drink over the next decade.
