An elegant, delicate, charming wine, the gravelly soils of La Grave offer poise and linearity, while the ripe, red fruit and characteristic silky texture make the wine approachable and enjoyable, even in its youth.

Ripe and showy in feel, with lots of warmed fig, blackberry and plum compote aromas and flavors, supported by velvety tannins and backed by a long, ganache- and incense-filled finish. Very seductive. Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2021 through 2037. 1,760 cases made.

Barrel Sample. This is dense, rich and full of fruits and spice. It is a powerful wine, with concentrated tannins behind the smooth exterior. The finish shows freshness thanks to a flourish of acidity.

Composed of 95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc, the wine is medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the 2017 la Grave is a little closed to begin, unfurling to reveal notes of crushed rocks, iron ore and wild mushrooms over a core of blackberry pie, wild blueberries and mulberries. Medium-bodied, the palate delivers mineral-tinged black fruits and a firm, chewy frame, finishing earthy.

The 2017 La Grave is powerful and dense in the glass. Dark blue and purplish fruit, lavender, spice, menthol, licorice and dried herbs give the 2017 a decidedly somber intensity that comes through in the wine's overall feel as well. The tannins remain firm and sinewy, while slightly gamy, animal undertones reinforce an impression of rusticity. The 2017 is best enjoyed at the dinner table alongside rich, hearty fare.

Checking in as 95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc, the 2017 Chateau La Grave sports a medium ruby hue as well as outstanding notes of blackcurrants, ripe cherries, dried herbs, and spicy incense. It's not a blockbuster yet has medium-bodied depth and richness, a great mid-palate, and light tannins. Drink this charming, balanced, elegant Pomerol any time over the coming 10-15 years.
